Flag Burning: KCSU Statement

During the screening of the royal wedding put on by KCSU, one of the Union Jacks bought on the Ents budget to decorate the bar was taken down and burnt.

KCSU condemns this act, as it has offended members to whom it is a needlessly divisive and violent way to make a political point, especially during the royal wedding. KCSU has proper channels for debating contentious issues such as this. When members were previously offended by similar decorations and entertainments, it was brought to an Open Meeting for discussion, to allow for a democratic resolution. This, rather than taking further provocative action, is the appropriate way to deal with such issues.

Furthermore, KCSU rejects the accusation that the decoration in the bar violated our constitution. The constitution forbids the use of its resources to propagate prejudices. The Union Jack is a symbol, and therefore can mean different things to different people in different contexts. For the constitution to be interpreted in such a way as to forbid the display of any symbol that may cause offence would forbid the display of existing artwork in our bar, and would have resulted in the cancellation of previous USA, Irish or Soviet themed parties.
